Most digital camera colour profiles are set for printing that is they have a colour profile called AdobeRGB 1998, for displaying pictures on the web, the colour profile of the image has to be changed to sRGB IEC61966, this is because as a standard, monitors are calibrated using the sRGB profile.

So using Lightroom or Apperture, you need to make sure any image that goes anywhere near the web has had it's colour profile changed to sRGB, this eliminates any issues with washed out colours appearing on screens all over the world.

Colour profiling of images is almost a science, because also depending on the way your Lab has their printers calibrated, when sending prints to them, if one wants to make sure the prints received back are exactly what you want, your monitor has to be calibrated right, the profile of the image has to be right, most of the information you have to get from your lab. Took us about a year of trying loads of labs before we settled on 3 labs we are perfectly happy with
